Why We Celebrate Sawan: The Month of Lord Shiva
The profound significance of Sawan is rooted in the Samudra Manthan (समुद्र मंथन) legend, detailed vividly in the Skanda Purana and Shiva Purana. During the great churning of the cosmic ocean, the deadly Halahala poison emerged, threatening to annihilate the universe. It was a terrifying moment. But Lord Shiva, in an act of supreme sacrifice, consumed the poison. This is what saved everyone.
His throat turned blue, earning him the name Neelkanth (the blue-throated one). To soothe the intense heat and burning, the Devas offered him holy water from the Ganges. This act of offering water (Abhishek) during Sawan emulates their gratitude and provides immense relief to Lord Shiva. That's why it's the central ritual of the month. Plus, it's believed Goddess Parvati performed intense tapasya during this month to win him as her husband, making it especially auspicious for unmarried women.

Sawan Somvar Vrat Vidhi: A Step-by-Step Guide
Observing the Sawan Somvar vrat is a deeply spiritual practice, and following the correct vidhi, as performed by Vaidik pandits, amplifies its benefits. It isn't just about fasting; it's a complete devotional process that realigns your energy with Shiva's. This changes everything.
- Preparation (Pratahkal Sankalp): Your day must begin before sunrise, during Brahma Muhurat. After bathing, wear clean white clothes and face east. Take a Sankalp (vow) by holding water and flowers, stating your name, gotra, and your intention for observing the fast.
- Shiva Lingam Sthapana: Clean your home temple or puja space thoroughly. If you have a Shiva Lingam, place it on a clean pedestal. If not, you can create a Parthiv Lingam from clay.
- Abhishek (The Sacred Bath): This is the most crucial step. Begin by offering clean water, followed by Panchamrit (a mix of raw milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar). Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" continuously. Conclude with a final offering of Gangajal.
- Alankaram (The Offerings): Now, you adorn the Lingam. Apply a tilak of white chandan (sandalwood paste). Offer Bilva Patra (Bel leaves), Dhatura flowers and fruit, Aak flowers, and white flowers. Each offering has a deep symbolic meaning.
- Mantra Jaap: Sit comfortably and chant the Shiva Panchakshari Mantra ("Om Namah Shivaya") on a Rudraksha mala for at least 108 times. You can also chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra for protection.
- Katha & Aarti: Read or listen to the Sawan Somvar Vrat Katha. Conclude the morning puja by singing the Shiva Aarti ("Om Jai Shiv Omkara") while lighting a ghee lamp.
- Naivedya & Prasad: Offer sattvic bhog, such as seasonal fruits or milk-based sweets. After the puja, this becomes prasad, which you can distribute among family members.
- Paran (Breaking the Fast): After performing the evening puja and offering prayers to Lord Shiva, you can break your fast. This is typically done after sunset by consuming the prasad.
Sawan Puja Samagri Checklist

Best Time: Early morning or before sleeping.
Shiva Aarti: Om Jai Shiv Omkara
The Shiva Aarti is the beautiful culmination of your puja. Singing it with deep devotion and a lit ghee lamp fills the space with divine energy. It's an essential part of the Sawan Somvar ritual.
ॐ जय शिव ओंकारा, स्वामी जय शिव ओंकारा ।
ब्रह्मा, विष्णु, सदाशिव, अर्द्धांगी धारा ॥
ॐ जय शिव ओंकारा...
Om Jai Shiv Omkara, Swami Jai Shiv Omkara |
Brahma, Vishnu, Sadashiv, Ardhangi Dhara ||
Om Jai Shiv Omkara...
Meaning: This aarti praises Lord Shiva as the supreme being, the source of the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, who shares his form with his consort, the divine feminine energy.
When to Sing: At the very end of your puja, after all offerings have been made, while circulating a ghee lamp in front of the deity.
Sawan Somvar Fasting Rules
The Sawan Somvar fast is typically a Phalahar vrat, meaning you can consume fruits and specific non-grain items. Why does this matter? It keeps the body light and the mind focused on devotion, not digestion.
- What to Eat: You can have fruits, milk, curd, buttermilk, and sabudana (tapioca). Kuttu (buckwheat flour) and singhara (water chestnut flour) are also permitted. Rock salt (sendha namak) can be used instead of regular salt.
- What to Avoid: Strictly avoid all grains like wheat and rice, lentils, non-vegetarian food, onions, garlic, and processed foods. Alcohol and tobacco are absolutely forbidden.
- When to Break (Paran): The fast is traditionally broken after the evening puja, post-sunset. You should first consume the prasad offered to Lord Shiva.
